Another year around the Son 9.1.2025
Read 1 Samuel 25, Romans 12:17-18
Two deaths.
First a prophet and anointer of kings, Samuel dies. He never lived to experience David’s kingship, yet his work for the Lord was done.
Contrast this when a worthless man of lawlessness dies.
David isn’t responsible for this man’s death, it comes at the hand of God.
Do not avenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God’s wrath, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Romans 12:19 NET
If David had executed his will, and Abigail had not in her wisdom intervened David would’ve never seen the verdict of God on the matter. This wisdom applies to us as well.
Wait for the Lord. THE LORD tells us vengeance is HIS.
Romans quotes from Deuteronomy 32 the song Moses sung/wrote in front of Joshua and gave to the children of Israel just before his death.
Here is a small portion: “Have I not kept this in reserve and sealed it in my vaults?
It is mine to avenge; I will repay.
In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.”
Deut 32:34-35 NIV
David’s experience with this truth—GOD AVENGES is written for our benefit and godliness.
When David heard that Nabal had died, he said, “Praised be the Lord who has vindicated me and avenged the insult that I suffered from Nabal!”
In real time the Lord was/is/will be with David, and this right after the death of Samuel.
Abigail’s words to David are potent. The Lord has kept you from shedding blood, and taking matters into your own hands. Now may your enemies and those who seek to harm you my Lord be like Nabal. (whoa look out and she continues)
The Lord will establish a lasting dynasty for my Lord because my Lord fights the battles of the Lord. May no evil be found in you all your days!
She speaks with audacity minus the arrogance often associated with audaciousness. Like Paul exhorted Titus she exhorted David with full authority. Titus 2:15 NET “So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke that carries full authority. Don’t let anyone look down on you.”
Consider David’s heart towards God’s correction in the Psalms. David writes in Psalm 141:4-5
Do not let me have evil desires or participate in sinful activities with men who behave wickedly.
I will not eat their delicacies. May the godly strike me in love and correct me.
May my head not refuse choice oil.
