Another year around the Son 2026
In the daily reading plan we read 1 Kings 15:25-34, Revelation 2:1-17

This is my mom’s Bible, and a photo she had of me when I was younger. The slip of green paper with her handwriting speaks to me today. Watchmen who stay silent in the face of an imminent attack aren’t really watchmen.
The biblical account says “the sins of Jeroboam” which will be used descriptively in repeated intervals throughout 2Kings (e.g. 2Kings 15:8, 9, 15, 24, 28).
Jeroboam had reshaped the priesthood to suit his rebellious ambition and political need for control over Israel.
The idolatrous vein from the priestly sin of Aaron is repeated, WHY? Why would they make golden calves and goat idols for worship?
“Behold your gods. O Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 2 Chronicles 11:15.
And so the faithful watch dogs bark.
You may recall how the prophet Ahijah had words of warning for Jeroboam and he was not afraid to deliver them:
“You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made for yourself other gods, idols made of metal; you have aroused my anger and turned your back on me.”
1 Kings 14:9 NIV
And in today’s reading, we see the final judgment, the elimination of Jeroboam‘s whole family. Sadly his sinful influence will still cause generations of harm.
New Testament Reading
The Spirit of Jesus in Revelation makes pronouncements. The one who has a firm grasp on the seven stars…language depicting the Creator. Christ is clear with the church. I know your works. And they are impressive. Endurance, check. Steadfast, yup.
But you have departed from your first love.
“But now I ask you, lady (not as if I were writing a new commandment to you, but the one we have had from the beginning), that we love one another. (Now this is love: that we walk according to his commandments.) This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning; thus you should walk in it.”
2 John 1:5-6 NET
“Watch out, so that you do not lose the things we have worked for, but receive a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not remain in the teaching of Christ does not have God. The one who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
2 John 1:8-9 NET
“For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.”
Acts 20:27-30 NIV
