AWAKE BIBLE IN A YEAR AUGUST 22
Read Obadiah 1, Psalm 82-83

Obadiah 1 and Jeremiah 49 both have visions of judgement about Edom. There is among these contemporaries a complete agreement between their visions of judgement. The competition that leads to aggression common among brothers is dealt a corrective blow. Edom failed to show compassion. How you treat your kin matters to God. Even indifference is considered wrong to the LORD. Passivity in another’s misfortune is choosing sides in the eyes of God. Edom went further they gloated over Jacob’s misfortune. And then again they go further by looting their wealth and cutting down the fugitives. Kings are to aid the powerless. And there is a heavenly court that will convene to judge nations. (Psalm 82:1)
Pride deceives. Esau’s violence against his brother is called to account. All alliances for Israel’s destruction will have a judgment day.
They are judged for lack of brotherly love. We are to rescue the weak and the needy (Psalm 82:4). Vindicate, uphold, deliver the poor and oppressed, represent your common FATHER. You are sons of the most high (Psalm 82:6). His rule over all nations is obvious. Every nation will be sifted by the Lord, Edom is no exception. Psalm 83 prays for this vindication from the Lord.
Psalm 83:18 Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord—that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.
