Read 1 Kings 3-4, 2 Chronicles 1, Psalm 72
SOLOMON’S PRAYER: Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 2 Chronicles 1:10 Solomon is asking for the right thing as the new king of God’s people.
Beth L. Tanner a professor of the old testament at New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Brunswick, NJ writes on the historical significance of Psalm 72, ‘This psalm is understood by most scholars to be a coronation hymn for the King of Judah.’
Psalm 72:4 “May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor.” Solomon actually does this in his first judicial act by finding the complicated truth between two mothers and only one remaining baby. When he discerns correctly who the rightful mother is, he establishes his reputation for wisdom. God granted him what he requested, wisdom and knowledge and his rule marked the nation of ISRAEL with peace on all sides. Solomon’s rule is a renown golden age for the nation’s wealth and prosperity. It’s plain to see the powerful impact of wise governance.
Take time to pray: Lord IN YOU is the MUCH NEEDED wisdom to navigate, discern, and apply knowledge, and to govern people. I humbly ask for it. Our lives need good governance. Govern my family and places of leadership today. LORD use my words, my acts of service, and my decisions of authority to show your wisdom. I am reminded ‘He who wins souls is wise’, (Proverbs 11:30). I pray for this today, Amen
The rule and authority JESUS is marked by a wisdom greater than that of Solomon. “The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, ONE greater than Solomon is here.” Matthew 12:42
Isaiah 9:7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. Jesus is the only KING, from the line of David who can fulfill the following verse: May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. Psalm 72:5
Lord be as constant in my heart and life as the moon, as enduring and endless as the sun, till my babies, babies know of your faithfulness. Lord let the summer moon and autumn sun, remind me of you my faithful GOD. Amen
