AWAKE BIBLE IN A YEAR JANUARY 13
READ GENESIS 27-29
The transfer of trust —will Jacob follow, the footsteps of his father Isaac, and his grandfather, Abraham? Or has his trickery bent him away from God? The means to obtaining God’s blessing have been less than honorable. Jacob is hungry for God’s covenant blessing.
Jacob in a dream sees a ladder of God with angels ascending and descending. He is in awe when he wakes, and a realization of God hits him, he is at the gate of heaven. And thousands of years later Jesus would use the same language when he calls Nathanael.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see Heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man” (John 1:51) Jesus is our place of trust and covenant too. Jesus is our gate. Start your conversation with him today.
“Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God”
(Genesis 28:20-21 NIV)
He doesn’t ask for riches and the wealth of nations from God, he asks for food and clothing.
God is witnessing, the heart of the younger son.
And they enter a real honest relationship. It’s their first conversation.
“I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you” (Gen. 28:13-15)
The details of Jacob’s blessing and deceit, speak of God’s grace. A grace unchanging even for us.
His kiss from his father is won by dishonesty, and YET God sees his struggle meets with him. God gives Jacob a life changing clarity that night. Jacob finds love in Rachel, and kisses her right away, but deceit was sown and deceit will be harvested.
A good reminder, what sort of sowing and harvesting are we doing?
Is it to the flesh? We will reap corruption.
BUT he who sows to the Spirit shall reap life everlasting.
Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (GAL. 6:8-9)
Proverbs 11:18 He who sows righteousness reaps a true reward!
Romans 6:23 for the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT 🎁 of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
