Dear Twenty-Something, Jen Roush
Dear Twenty-Something,
As I share a couple thoughts, my hope is that you find encouragement. I realize now that most of what I wish I had known or had done differently in my twenties came from not walking closely with God. As it has always been from the beginning of time, pain and regret followed. But thanks to a kind and compassionate Savior, His truth and power freed me from guilt that had created fear and intense anxiety. His written love brought freedom to my mind and heart. In the event you currently find yourself in a pit of pain or regret, consumed with fear or anxiety, know that God is faithful to rescue those who cry out for His help (Psalm 107…my ‘testimony chapter’…what a marvelous and gracious God! Go ahead, read it ☺). He longs to deliver and refresh us, His most valued creation!!
Ok, so my first thought, and I would argue the most important because I truly believe it’s what all the rest hinges on, is that you will never ever regret devouring God’s word. I wish I had read it sooner!! His truths and promises will continually transform you and give you unquenchable hope to “see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” no matter what may happen or in what stage of life you find yourself. His word will restore and sustain life to every part of your beautiful being, heart, mind, body, and soul, acting as a shield to your heart and mind so that fear will have no hold on you and you will thrive in peace and joy. His ways aren’t restrictive, as I once believed, but rather full of love, wisdom, and guidance that allows us to live in the freedom that He came to bring the world. Immerse yourself in truth and the truth will set you free!
The flip-side is that without God’s word imbedded in us we will most definitely believe lies. Nibble by nibble they are slyly fed to us and craftily shift us millimeter by millimeter away from believing who God says we are, knowing our purpose on earth, His ways, and His best for us. Know that you were created with glory, by and for the One who determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. In fact, you were born for this exact time in history-Acts 17! You are His light. God has given you good and special gifts (love, mercy, insight, knowledge, encouragement, wisdom, discernment, speaker of truth, compassion, faith, etc.). Lavishly use whatever gifts you’ve been given to shine God’s goodness to others: it will also bring you joy! Another beautiful gift is the gift of sex. Celebrate it at the right time, in the right context, with the right person. Reject the perpetrating voice who whispers ‘it’s not a big deal’ and tries to minimize the sacredness of purity. Protect your tender heart in God’s love and truth: You’re worth it!!
God’s love for you is immeasurable and nothing can separate you from His love. I am so thankful for His gift of forgiveness and the Holy Spirit. Everything we need and desire is found in Him. May you have unspeakable joy as you go forth….
Love,
Your Older Sister, Jen
